A Mook gig ....
Tas Music Showcase – March
12 2005
Well…..we got asked by
Mel’ from Tas Music to play at their showcase at the place I like to call “the
Fish that cannot be named “ & it seemed a reasonable request as she was
nice enuff & had done a good job interviewing the Bunny & Red men on
the wireless, so we said yeah & then we got asked to play at the Republic
on the same night & perhaps we should have done that one, but, no, we’d
committed, besides what else were we gonna do ? Watch Carlton win the Harry
Potter – fine for Webmasters, bad for normal folk….anyway, my Minister for War
& Justice was spending our wedding anniversary in Adelaide that weekend, so
at least I was at a loose end…so it was us & Modus from Launee – nice bunch
of guys, esp' the drummer - & 6 Ninja ( which made us double happy as it
meant the Horns of Dilemma would definitely be there ) & some dude called
Dale who played turntable & drummed or somesuch, & it was both fine
& dandy & we practiced & it filled a gap whilst more songs floated
to the top of the creative septic tank & Trev’ didn’t whinge too much about
gigging & it all seemed too smooth to be true, then we got an
unenthusiastic review in the mag’ &, more to the point, saw the Tas Music
publication in all its gory glory &, I must admit, it was a bit
“Tassie-piss-weak-world” & everyone got a bit gnarly, but the Redman saw
Mel’ & had a yaffle ‘bout things & she’s just taken over & is at
least having a dip so we all just shrugged our (rounded) shoulders, pulled in
our pigeon chests & went through with it (after a bit of too-ing &
fro-ing apropos drumkits…Christ, there was gonna be 4 there at one stage !!)...&
we played & I thought it all went rather well…there were the usual
road-humps, but we unveiled “Porch” …even if we forgot to pack the end bit &
the Horns were grand & everyone had a thin veneer of professionalism, so’se
no panic, despite the perennials of sound problems & timing &
forgetfulness & so-on-&-so-forth…apparently we were good too, esp’ when
we “got into it” ( as they say on Naked Dwarf) & from the first Mookish
rumble to Trevor’s broken A string as we went out, well, I would’ve paid good
money to see us & I love the little committee’s that form – in this case I
was banging metaphorics with Simone’ & Paul with the occasional smirk from
Kim & Tor, but she’s pretty squeezy on that there stage……of course we drank
after that – mostly outside as we caught mates, ragged Harrison Ford, enjoyed
Dr Carlos as he got updates on the Wizard cup on his mobile & listened to
the rest of the mob…..I really enjoyed Modus, but they were effing loud &
they blew me outa the pub – I preferred them to 6 Ninja , but was distinctly in
the minority there: the 6 Ninjas were good & they even got some of the
Mookee-men up on their pegs on the dance floor, which is a bit
Ripley’s-believe-it-or-not for some of ‘em & Bailey & Luke-da-Mook
always plays with élan & style….I’d left by the time Dale got on, but he
was rather well liked by, seemingly, one & all - some Mooks Guitarists
& piano players getting quite enthusiastic ‘bout the scratching &
banging…who’d have thought &, really, it was just a fine little gig…..of
course 3 weeks later there’s no more enthusiasm for future shows & we seem
to have misplaced our 3 mike stands, but they were pink dotted & they’ll
turn up….thanx Mel – & more strength to Tasmusic….I’ll go & check the
website out meself
