CRASH INTO YOU

(CHILTONE)

If Australia can produce a chantuese with the lanquid, country loveliness of Kasey Chambers, then there is no reason why Tasmania's Hey Mook can't wander into the same territory. The Hobart based septet's work prowls from Go-Betweens-inspired pop (at times you can almost swear that lead singer Simon Cruickshank must be some sort of aural Grant McLennan doppelganger) and Memphis country filtered through Alex Chilton (their label name might be more tha coincidence). For pop lovers, there are more guitar arpeggios than you can point a stick at; the opening "Cold Snap" is awash in them. The Mooks change things up for "Come along Sweetness", a piano-driven ballad that could have been on R.E.M.'s Automatic for the People. The album's high points come with "Banjo Frenzy", a mid-set instrumental palate cleanser that simutaneously manages to sound both eastern and southern, and the closing "Flat Country Mountain Boy", replete with fast picked mandolin and jaw harp. On the minus side, Hey Mook seemingly can't decide if they want to be a country band or if they spend all their time staring at their sneakers like Belle and Sebastian. (www.heymook.com)
