hey mook - crash into you HEY MOOK
"Crash Into You"
CD ALBUM on CHILTONE RECORDS

HEY MOOK are an obscure Tasmanian band that have been around since 1987. The band is apparently inspired by BIG STAR but this is not easily spotted in their sound. There are some stark, haunting songs, which could have nicely slotted on to the 3rd record from Alex and crew, but the most obvious influence I hear on this album is the GO BETWEENS. There is a clear "Send Me A Lullaby" era feel happening here. (Cold Snap, Charlie Rich) The band infuse elements of country into their songs - there's bouncy bango and mandolin a-plenty (Bango Frenzy, Flat Country Mountain Boy) but there is also a melancholy, brooding mood on many songs (Worms, Crash Into You) The dark ballad Let's Go Down The Docks reminds of NICK CAVE'S recent material. HEY MOOK even attempt a ragged rocking VELVET UNDERGROUND like anthem on San Francisco. There is plenty of variety happening here and many strong songs. It may require repeated listens for full impact to hit. Much to discover with each spin. Enjoy!
